Luna turned 6 months over the weekend and has been showing signs of readiness for solid foods so we thought Thanksgiving would be a good time to let her go for it! We have actually already given her tastes of avocado and apple, but she couldn't really hold the avocado well enough to put it in her mouth (slippery!), and we didn't let her hold the piece of apple because it was too small. This time, we gave her a piece of steamed broccoli to chew on. By the look on her face, I am pretty sure she loved it! HAHA.
We are doing BLW (Baby Led Weaning) with her. This means we won't be spoon feeding her "baby food" and instead will be letting her feed herself safe and appropriate "real foods". Babies love and want to feed themselves. This is about learning and exploration and not about getting food into her. She doesn't need the food for her main source of nutrition yet so we won't be making a fuss over how much she eats. We will be offering her healthy options to choose from and letting her play, squish, throw, mush and taste and eventually start eating the food! It encourages her to decide what she likes and trust her sense of hunger and fullness (just like she already does with breastmilk) and to have control over what she eats. There will be no force feeding in this household, and that makes me happy.
